At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and He said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank You for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased You to do it this way. My Father has entrusted everything to Me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”
Then when they were alone, He turned to the disciples and said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen. I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.”Luke 10:21-24
Well this is a curious puzzle. As Alice in Wonderland would say, “It’s getting curiouser and curiouser.”
- What hidden things?
- What things are being hidden?
- By whom and from whom?
- Who are those who think themselves wise and clever?
- Why do we suddenly have this unit in the midst of what surrounds it?
- How does this segment [Luke 10:21-24] connect to what is before it and / or what follows it?
- Does this indeed connect?
- Which way?
- Back to what preceded it or ahead to what follows?
Note this segment is followed by the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Does that mean we have a new topic and point and so this unit before us today is a closing segment for what has gone before? Or does it open the following segment? Or does it glue both together, what has gone before and what is coming? Those are the options. Time again for you to take stock of where we have come from and where Luke (or Jesus) is heading to? Your essential task is to try to make sense of this portion in its context. Why did Jesus say what He said and why here?
Time to make sense of it on your own. We will unpack it in the next Gem together.
