Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led [ago] (led) Luke / [anago] (led up) Matt by the Spirit in the wilderness, where He was tempted by the devil for forty days [and forty nights]. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry. Then the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone/these stones to become a loaf/loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone but on every rhema coming from the mouth of God.'” [Deut 8:3]
Luke 4:1-4
Deuteronomy 8:3 records coming from the mouth LXX
{Will live} the man but by every word {of God}
[Then the devil took Him up[to a very high mountain]and revealed to Him all the kingdoms of the world[and their glory]in a moment of time. “I will give You the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will give it all to You if You fall down and will worship me.” Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only Him.‘”] [Deut 6:13][Luke misses out the Mark segment which Matt includes: [*and the angels came and ministered to Him.](Luke’s 2nd temptation is Matthew’s 3rd)
Then the devil took Him to Jerusalem / holy city, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If You are the Son of God, jump off! (throw yourself down) For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order His angels to protect and guard you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.'” [Ps 91:11-12] Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.'” [Deut 6:16] When the devil had finished [every temptation] tempting Jesus *, he left Him until the next opportunity came.
Luke 4:5-13
Well l am sure you noticed the first major change – the order of the temptations. It probably confused you a little as you tried to compare them.
I have emboldened the Lukan changes above. Red for omission, green for an addition and orange for a change in order or expression.
Now that I have itemized the changes or differences for you, again, I’m going to give you time to digest it and ponder on the changes. We will pick it up again tomorrow.
Every new day is a new opportunity for God to surprise you.
