You may wonder why I am going back to Chapter 1:17. Two reasons :–
1) it is relevant at this point
2) someone asked me to explain what it means; they wondered why I missed that element out.
Yes I confess I don’t comment on everything that I could comment on. In this case however it is important. The reason for missing this one out was deliberate. It is part of a deeper level in Deeper Bible and so I keep it hidden until the moment it is revealed.
Rom 1:17 For in it God’s righteousness is being revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, “The righteous will live by faith.”
What do you think “from faith to faith” means?
Here are some possible answers. You choose which you think are the right ones.
These answers come from students at Bible College
- “From generation to generation.”
- “From one believer to another.”
- “From your faith to my faith.”
- From faith based on words to faith based on works.”
- “From faith we profess to faith we practise.”
- “The more faith we have the more will be revealed.”
- “Faith shared between religious systems yet still Christian. i.e. Catholic, Protestant.
- “Faith shared between different “faiths” or religions – Jewish, Catholic Muslim etc
Which is right?
The correct answer is none are right. This is often what we do: in church, in our cell group, at anytime. We share out of ignorance or from our own assumptions. We don’t bother to dig deeper into Scripture to find the right answer. We simply make an assumption about what something means, or interpret it through our own perspective.
The expression “from faith to faith” is a Greek idiom. Knowing that, you spend the time before the next Gem finding out what it means.
How will you do that?
What will you do to solve the problem?
I have already told you the key in other Bible Gems.
Go and apply it. Answer next Gem!
By the time you are 100% sure, you are too late.
